The Centre for Asia-Pacific Future Studies:

Kyudai’s Centre for Asia-Pacific Future Studies, established in 2015, brings together a number of Asia specialists within the university, and acts as a bridge with leading overseas centres of interdisciplinary research in Asian Studies. The centre boasts particular expertise in the areas of Border Studies and in the study of Korean history and politics, and Korea-Japan relations.

The Kyushu University Research Institute for East Asia Environments

The East Asian Environmental Problems Project operated by Kyushu University was established in September 2007 as part of the events held to mark the 100th anniversary of the university, and was reorganized as the Research Institute for East Asia Environments (RIEAE) in April 2009.

Through RIEAE, Kyushu University proposes what we, as a nation, have to do as a member of the community of East Asian countries, and aims to provide practical solutions for environmental issues in international cooperation with industry, government, and academia.

Starting a research career in Asian Studies at Kyushu University

JSPS Ronpaku Fellow: Mark Maca (The Philippines)

Mr. Mark Maca, a Technical Advisor at the Philippines Government Department of Education (Ministry of Education), was awarded a three-year JSPS Ronpaku fellowship in 2015 to enable him to complete his doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Dr. Edward Vickers of Kyushu University’s Education Department. He is conducting a historical study of Education for Migration and the Philippines Diaspora, from American colonial times to the present day.

The prestigious JSPS Ronpaku programme provides support each year for a limited number of promising researchers from selected Asian and African countries to enable them to submit a doctoral dissertation to a Japanese university without formally matriculating. More information is available here:
